A scenic and popular hike that allows visitors to walk through jagged fields of black lava with incredible views of Sunset Crater.
Lenox Crater Trail (1.6 miles round trip, moderate)
This hike includes a moderate climb with rewarding panoramic views from the top of Sunset Crater, the ash fields, and surrounding peaks.
a path (0.2 mile loop, easy but bumpy)
Walk through rough “a’a” lava, which is sharp, thick rock. It’s a quick and easy hike, but you’ll need sturdy footwear.
Visit the Sunset Crater Visitor Center
Here, visitors can learn about the geology of the area and the 1085 eruption that helped the nearby Wupatki Village flourish through educational exhibits about the geology and history of the area.
