Barru Restaurant in Ljubljana – Dr Jam Travels

barrú The restaurant is Japanese-Peruvian fusion (Nikkei) cuisine brought to Ljubljana by Grega Božičnik (also owner of Romeo, Tokyo Piknik, Sushimama and Fetiche). The head chef is Rubén Chaves Atunga, while Tomás Bares helps. After work and before the murder mystery game with Gregor, Teja and Tedej, I visited this little place by the Ljubljanica River. The atmosphere is like a sushi bar, and I sat next to the counter (barru).

Top of the menu is ceviche, tiraditos and sushi. There are some meat dishes, soups, cocktails and desserts. With the help of a waitress, I tried a few different options.

Yellowtail tiraditos: thin slices of yellowtail with ponzu sauce, yellow chili cream and furikake (23). The first course was like fish carpaccio, between Peruvian ceviche and Japanese sashimi; fresh, acidic and spicy.

ARV roll: fried shrimp (8 units), avocado, white fish, furikake and negui (€16.9). Also Salmon Nigiri (2 units): salmon, white butter truffle, mantle salt (€8.5). Different setup for the rolls, Nigiri was nice, chunky salmon but finished with a burner. They didn’t suggest soy sauce because it’s already seasoned enough. Sushi with a Peruvian touch.

Tuna Ceviche: Tuna marinated in Japanese sauce, cilantro, red onion, avocado, edamame, fried nori (€25). I had in mind to finish, but then I decided to also try the ceviche with tuna (Peruvian acidity/onion/cilantro and Japanese edamame/nori/sauce).

Cana sparkling water €3. In total 76.4 with tip €84. The dishes are innovative and interestingly presented, bringing a new option to the Ljubljana culinary scene. Raw fish is the main ingredient, prepared with a fusion of Peruvian and Japanese influences. But in my opinion they are a bit expensive.
